Maxie was quite a dog! Every year our vet has a Blessing of the Animals in a local nature preserve. It is always on the Sunday closest to the Feast of St. Francis of Assissi (October 4th). The local parish priest goes over to perform the blessing. My sister Nancy and I take our dog, or dogs every year. One year when we had Maxie, we were talking to one of the vets in the practice. She had taken her three rescue Greyhounds. All of a sudden, my shoe felt warm and wet. I looked down and there was Maxie…………. weeing into my shoe! I couldn’t believe my perfect little boy was doing that.

His ashes were buried on 10th November 2008 at the Angels Rest Cemetary, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, Kanab, Utah.

When I buried him there, I left my heart.

GOD’S GARDEN

God looked around his garden

And he found an empty place

He then looked down upon the earth

And saw your precious face

He put his arms around you

And lifted you to rest

God’s Garden must be beautiful

He always takes the best

He knew that you were suffering

He knew you were in pain

He knew you’d never ever

Get well on earth again

So he closed your weary eyelids

And whispered “Peace be thine”

Then he took you up to Heaven

With hands so gentle and kind

It broke our hearts to lose you

But you did not go alone

For part of us went with you

The day God welcomed you home

RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….
